Felician student Maria Lopez will take part in a panel discussion at the annual United Nations Commission on the Status of Women Conference, which will be held from February 27 to March 9 at UN Headquarters in New York.
More than 200 international and national non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and nearly 3,000 delegates will take part in the conference.
"The priority theme of the conference is the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication," said Dr. Mary Norton, Associate Dean and Professor of Global Academic Initiatives at Felician College. "We are also discussing the Social Development Floor Initiative."
Last year, student members of Felician's United Nations Fellows Program began working on an initiative to ensure basic social protection for the 80 percent of the global population that does not have a set of social guarantees such as income and food security, adequate nutrition or universal access to essential services such as health, education, housing, water or sanitation.
Felician is one of only 25 colleges world-wide granted Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status by the United Nations.
